Now you have an opportunity to join them at one of their famous ‘happenings’. Bexley Magic Society Close-up Competition. Roy Marsh writes: Wednesday 19th October saw the annual close-up magic competition at Bexley Magic Society. The Marvello Cup Competition is named after former member Terry Wright, who used to perform under that name. Five members of the club demonstrated their best close-up effects to a full audience including three judges, two of whom were lay people and one a magician from another club. Taking part were Adrian Sels, Jason Deverell, Kevin Goodwin, Andy Richardson and the eventual winner, Terry Herbert (pictured here being presented with the trophy by club President, Bernard Pinnock). The audience were treated to magic ranging from signed bank notes appearing inside kiwi fruit to linking rings as well as card tricks and mind reading. The judges were asked to mark in two categories, mystification and entertainment, giving marks out of ten in both cases. Terry’s winning act included some demonstrations of the “special characteristics” of the new plastic £5.00 note, allowing a pen to penetrate it but remain undamaged for example. He also produced a deck of cards, blank on both sides except for a freely named card, chosen after the deck had been show to be blank. Congratulations to Terry on his success and thank you to the other contestants for providing us with a great evening’s entertainment. www.bexleymagic.org.uk. 22.10.16
