Victorian
Entertainments: There Will Be Fun. An exhibition celebrating some of the
most popular entertainments of Victorian times has just opened at
British Library. Focusing on five colourful characters, follow their stories
as the exhibition brings the worlds they inhabited to life. These Victorian
A-listers include Dan Leno, the original pantomime dame and ‘funniest man on
earth’, John Nevil Maskelyne, magician and manager of ‘England’s Home of
Mystery’, and the great circus showman ‘Lord’ George Sanger. Also hear of those
whose fame has now faded such as Annie De Montford, a mill worker turned
mesmerist, and Evanion the Royal conjuror. The exhibition contains many items
loaned from The Magic Circle Museum collection and archive. The exhibition runs
until Sunday 12th February 2017 during public library opening hours. Free

Conjuring
at the Court – Thursday 27th October. Enjoy a bewitching night of magic and
comedy at our Hallowe’en Special!
• Mel Mellers has always been one of our most popular performers. He’s one of
the most successful comedy magicians in the UK. If you haven’t seen him yet –
don’t miss him!
• The multi-talented James Brown, magician, hypnotist, pickpocket…. Unlike most
performers, he doesn’t work to a set routine; as a ‘professional opportunist’,
he creates something completely new whenever he performs. It’s a sort of jazz
magic – and it’s breathtaking.
• Megan Knowles-Bacon is of the rare concept acts that grace the world of magic,
combining delightful ballet with skilled sleight of hand to produce a charming
and unforgettable performance.
• And we welcome Al Prendo, a comedy magician with a completely original style.
His appearance on Britain’s Got Talent has attracted 1.5 million YouTube Hits!
‘Comic Genius – the new Tommy Cooper’ - Piers Morgan. ‘I have never laughed so
much in my whole life’ – Amanda Holden.
• Compèred by co-producer Russell Levinson.
The show starts at 8pm and runs to 10pm with an interval. It’s in the lovely
function room of the Drayton Court. Come early to enjoy a meal before the show.

The
Vienna Experiment: "Explore the unexplained with Professor Franklin
Fitzroy-Smogg and Baron Gustav von Wraith. Since first meeting in 1888 at the
European Institute of Parapsychology in Baden-Baden, Germany, the Professor and
the Baron have toured Europe exposing fake mediums and spiritual charlatans.
Now you have an opportunity to join them at one of their famous ‘happenings’.
Part lecture, part demonstration, they will not only lay bare the techniques
used to deceive the vulnerable, but also take you through
their most baffling and downright disturbing cases. They will conduct a series
of thrilling experiments with, and on, you, their ‘witnesses’.
From psychometry to spirits; from Tarot cards to the Ouija Board; from
numerology to séance, join them as they search for conclusive proof of the
existence of the ‘other realm’.
Written and performed by magicians and actors Jasper Blakeley and Frank E.
Haschka, The Vienna Experiment is a funny and thrilling theatrical event that
will chill, delight and amaze in equal measure."

Bexley
Magic Society Close-up Competition. Roy Marsh writes: Wednesday 19th October
saw the annual close-up magic competition at Bexley Magic Society. The Marvello
Cup Competition is named after former member Terry Wright, who used to perform
under that name. Five members of the club demonstrated their best close-up
effects to a full audience including three judges, two of whom were lay people
and one a magician from another club. Taking part were Adrian Sels, Jason
Deverell, Kevin Goodwin, Andy Richardson and the eventual winner, Terry Herbert
(pictured here being presented with the trophy by club President, Bernard
Pinnock). The audience were treated to magic ranging from signed bank notes
appearing inside kiwi fruit to linking rings as well as card tricks and mind
reading. The judges were asked to mark in two categories, mystification and
entertainment, giving marks out of ten in both cases. Terry’s winning act
included some demonstrations of the “special characteristics” of the new plastic
£5.00 note, allowing a pen to penetrate it but remain undamaged for example. He
also produced a deck of cards, blank on both sides except for a freely named
card, chosen after the deck had been show to be blank. Congratulations to Terry
on his success and thank you to the other contestants for providing us with a
great evening’s entertainment.
