Surprise,
Surprise! Latest from International: "For the last few years the ultimate
event of the Sunday daytime of The International Magic Convention (18th-20th
November) has been the presentation of the David Berglas International Magic
Award. Always a closely guarded secret the recipients over the last few years
include Uri Geller, David Copperfield and Juan Tamariz, all of whom have been
happy to answer questions from the assembled audience at The Mermaid Theatre in
London following the presentation. The surprise element of who the recipient is
going to be has always created an incredible buzz in the theatre leading up to
the proceedings and some of our most cherished memories of the Convention. Once
again David Berglas has another amazing event planned for this year, and once
again we’d like you to join him and us, not only for that, but also for the many
other fantastic lectures and shows to celebrate our 40th anniversary." The

For
this year's More History of Mystery at the IBM British Ring
convention in Southport, on Saturday afternoon (22nd September) Eddie Dawes will
present a programme of speakers who will cover three interesting and very
contrasting topics. One of the important magical centenaries of 2011, and
certainly the most tragic, is the death of The Great Lafayette in the fire that
occurred on 9th May at the Edinburgh Empire Palace Theatre, and which also cost
the lives of nine members of his company. Even in death, mystery abounded when
the body initially sent to the crematorium turned out not to be that of
Lafayette... Read the full article from Geoffrey Newton

The
Safety Net. Richard Smith of
www.rtsmagic.com writes:
"How many of you have stopped performing an impaled trick because of the fear of
it going wrong or would like to buy the trick but don’t for the same reason? Now
you can perform one of magic’s gut churning tricks without the fear of getting
hurt thanks to the Safety Net. If you’re going to spend in excess of £100 on
something that can harm you... doesn't it make sense to spend a little on
something that can protect you? The Safety Net is an enhancement to any impaled
trick you already own. It provides protection to the performer or his
volunteer... The Safety Net does it all. You will be purchasing a precision made
system to remove possible danger from an impaled illusion. A device that is
invisible to the audience, but gives you the performer the freedom to commit
100% to the final of the trick. We all know that’s how strong magic is created.
With the fear of getting hurt out of the way... you can now concentrate on your
performance." Visit

Merlins
of Wakefield had a great lecture from Danny Hunt of Amethyst on Wednesday
13th July at Merlins Magic Club. Danny has escaped from police cells across the
country, and also acts as consultant to many TV and stage productions. He talked
for over 2 hours about all aspects of escapology, lock picking and the amazing
Harry Houdini. His knowledge of the history of handcuffs is something he has
spent a lifetime acquiring. With pictures and videos to accompany the lecture,
it was fascinating to see this very specialised form of entertainment being
explained by a true master. Danny was assisted by Annette who kept him from
running overtime (well almost), but his enthusiasm for the subject was obvious
and I'm sure he would have talked till midnight given the chance. If you need a
lecture for your club or anything to do with escapology, then I suggest you get
in touch with Danny or Annette
